There are many sights around Phuket
Karon Beach

Karon Beach is one of the more popular areas of Phuket outside of Patong. It boasts a fair number of accommodation choices suitable for all budgets, ranging from simple rooms in Karon town to luxurious suites in posh resorts facing the sea. With few exceptions, most resorts are situated across Patak Road, which runs parallel to the beach. Since the tsunami of December 2004, many improvements have been made to the area’s infrastructure and there are now paved walkways along the beach and pedestrian bridges crossing the runoff canal.

The beach is quite wide, especially during low tide, with fine golden “barking” sand. The waves can be quite rough, especially during the rainy season (May to November), and there are strong rip currents that can pull a swimmer out to sea. Lifeguards towers dot the beach and flags are raised daily indicating the condition of the surf.  The water is quite clear, but during rough seas a number of jellyfish is apt to wash up on shore. There are a number of beach vendors offering umbrellas with lounge chairs as well as light snacks, cold beverages and massages. Prices are very reasonable, a full day’s chair/umbrella rental costing 100 THB and an hour’s massage 300 THB. A great number of restaurants and shops line Patak road so a meal and/or a bit of diversion from the beach is never far away. Karon is quite popular with Scandinavians, and it is quite common to see Danish, Norwegian or Swedish specialities featured in many menus.

Kamala Beach

Just to the North of Patong is another popular village/beach with a small town feel and not nearly as many people on the beach! Kamala Beach is only about 1 1/2 kilometers wide but has a totally different feel than any other beach on Phuket.

The far south end of the beach is a longtail fishing boat area where you can see many longtails used for fishing, day trips and diving. The southern and middle part of the beach are backed by small boutique hotels as well as economy guest houses and many varied restaurants. Step off the beach about 25 meters to the "beach" road and you will find a quaint shopping area with a few of the many popular shops you can find anywhere on the island. Tailors, swim wear, souveniers, beach toys and more restaurants.

The North end of the beach is a little quieter with a smattering of massage huts, makeshift bars and restuarants set up along the beach during high season. They are all  removed during the months of May thru October. The far North end has one permanent bar that is a local expat popular area. The water here is a little calmer for the kids.

Resort hotels in Kamala include the Marriott Courtyard, Kamala Print Resort and the Ayara Kamala Resort. There are a few others as well as short and long term rentals. Kamala is very popular with the scandanavian visitors which come back year after year for a month or three at a time.

In the main street are you will find 7-11's(5 of them in Kamala), mini Tesco, many small bars/restaurants, major banks, ATMS and all you will need for a great holiday. Friday evenings is the big market near Fantasea where about 100 or so vendors sell food, fresh fruit and vegetables, clothing and many assorted items. On Wednesday and Saturday is a smaller market at the south end of town. So there is always something for anyone wanting to shop or eat!

If you want a more authentic quiet Thailand experience with convenience to the busy nightlife of Patong, Kamala is a great and undiscovered choice!
