Safety Tips

Safety Tips
Thailand is generally a safe place to visit, and in this regard Phuket is no different. Violent crime is much less common in Thailand than in many other parts of the world. A large percentage of crimes that affect visitors to Phuket are petty thefts, in the form of pickpocketing in busy areas or thefts from hotel rooms. To avoid being a victim, be vigilant at all times and only carry with you what you need. You should deposit all your remaining valuables in your hotel safe.
Credit card fraud is an increasing problem in Thailand. Keep your cards safe and only use them at reputable establishments. To report a lost or stolen credit card, call:

American Express - 02 273 0022-44
Master Card - 02 299 1990-2
Visa - 02 299 1990-29.

As in any other part of the world, be on the look out for confidence scams. If something appears to be too good to be true, it most likely is. This is especially the case with gemstones. If you feel you have been scammed, your first port of call should be the Tourist Police.

Tourist Police

Most Tourist Police officers speak English and have a lot of experience in dealing with foreigners. If you have fallen victim to a scam or need to contact the police for any reason, you should contact the Tourist Police. If the matter is outside of their jurisdiction they will at least be able to liaise with the local police for you.

The Tourist Police can be contacted on 1155. Alternatively, the regular police hotline is 191.

Terrorism

There has been an increased threat from terrorism in Thailand's southern most provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, where there have been a number of bombings and clashes between security forces and separatist rebels. Many governments have issued warnings to their citizens against non-essential travel to these provinces. The Thai authorities have stepped up counter-terrorism measures, including increasing security at major tourist areas such as Phuket.
